Marseillan to Le Somail

The 300 year old Canal du Midi skirts the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean, meandering inland through ancient villages, Roman fortifications and famed vineyards. Canal Du Midi is defined by its photogenic beauty, lined with plane trees and crossed by pretty arched bridges. The Mediterranean weather and relaxed pace of life lulls you into unwinding as you snap away aboard as your luxury Canal du Midi barge meanders gently downstream.
This is the perfect place for photography but cycling or walking along scenic tow paths is a highlight also or simply watching the scenery pass by as you relax on the deck of a Canal du Midi barge with a camera in one hand and a cool drink in the other. In the distance you'll ponder on the Pyrenees while closer to hand vineyards stretch for thousands of square miles. You will discover a marvellous blend of ancient Gallo-Roman and traditional influences reflected throughout this region of historical importance. Explore this further with your tour guide when you visit the walled city of Carcassonne, the most complete medieval fortified city in existence. All in all, an area of France that is replete with photographic inspiration from ancient architecture, characterful chateau and landscapes to take your breath away.

 Proposed Itinerary** and Course Plan*

Arrival Day, Narbonne

Guests arrive in Narbonne for their one-night, pre-cruise hotel stay. Exact hotels are subject to booking but all are 4-star or above.

Sunday, Day 2 Marseillan

Guests are met at their hotel in Narbonne and transferred by private chauffeured minibus to the vessel Anjodi. Enjoy a chilled Champagne welcome with canapés and the opportunity to meet your Captain and crew and your photography hosts, Doug and Sue. Once you are settled into your cabin, you will be invited to a brief course outline (we'll quickly go over learning aims too) and followed by a relaxing stroll around the lovely village of Marseillan, enjoying a view of the oyster beds and home of Noilly Prat Vermouth and your first opportunity to play with your cameras, if you wish. Then it's back aboard Anjodi for a sumptuous dinner on board.

Monday, Day 3 Marseillan to Portiragnes

This morning we embark on our cruise along the 330-year-old Canal du Midi through the Bagnas nature reserve, with potential sightings of flamingos, white egrets and other migrating birds, ideal for those with  longer focal length lenses and perhaps a penchant for snapping wildlife. You'll gently cruise under photogenic bridges built from the local black volcanic stone. After lunch on board there's another short course briefing preparing for your visit to Pezenas, the delightful 16th century capital of the Languedoc; you'll have a crack at some architectural photography techniques too. Pezenas, mostly known for its associations with the French playwright Molière, is a wonderful backdrop for a delicious dinner back on board Anjodi and a short briefing on the next day's photography adventures.

Tuesday, Day 4 Portiragnes to Beziers

After breakfast, we cruise further along the Canal du Midi to our mooring near Beziers, with plenty of opportunity to photograph the surrounding countryside; you can walk or cycle along the towpath too. After lunch, we enjoy an informative winery tour and tasting at the 14th century Château de Perdiguier, named after King Charles V’s finance minister and famed for its frescoes and Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. This is yet another opportunity to practice architectural photography with the ravishing chateau as your subject, or to shoot some low light and close up photos, Sue and Doug will guide throughout.
Dinner on board is once gain accompanied by a run through of the next days photographic challenges.

Wednesday, Day 5 Beziers to Fonserannes

This morning’s excursion is to the wonderful Narbonne, a Roman Mediterranean capital where the Visigoth monarchs once lived. We tour the Archbishop’s Palace, Cathedral and Via Domitia and explore the indoor market at the hub of this bustling town, where you will have time to shop or simply absorb the vibrant atmosphere or take more wonderful images. The market is a particular highlight for shooting the 'local colour' and bustle of the busy market.
We return to the hotel barge for lunch and cross the aqueduct over the River Orb, before ascending the 7-lock flight of Fonserannes through the unique oval locks, all of which make for wonderful photographic subjects in their own right. We'll practice some 'street-style' photos of the locks and people working them. A great opportunity to play with black and white photo techniques. We then moor above the locks for the evening. Dinner is ashore tonight at L’Ambassade, a Michelin-rated gastronomic restaurant in Beziers. Don't forget your cameras to snap the food!

Thursday, Day 6 Fonserranes to Capestang

This morning we continue our cruise, passing through the world’s oldest canal tunnel at Malpas, again with perfect photography, cycling and walking opportunities along the way. Following lunch, we take an excursion to Minerve, the ancient capital of Minervois, which boasts a 12th century Cathar fort surrounded by deep limestone gorges. A scene that makes for dramatic and beautiful landscape photographs.
Besieged by Simon de Montfort in 1210, the fortified town's hilltop location affords spectacular views. The museum’s fascinating miniature recreation of the bloodthirsty Cathar rebellion completes the intriguing picture. Returning to the barge, there is time to explore Capestang, once the summer retreat of the Bishops of Narbonne, with its magnificent 14th century collegiate church. Dinner is on board this evening, with a short briefing on your continued photographic challenges for tomorrow.

Friday, Day 7 Capestang to Le Somail

In the morning we embark on our final cruise along the historic Canal du Midi to the delightful and picturesque village of Le Somail. After lunch, we visit Carcassonne. Dating back to the Gallo Roman era, this is the most complete medieval fortified city in existence today and makes it a brilliant place to practice all that you've been learning over the previous days. With its 52 watchtowers, portcullis and extraordinary repertoire of defences, it is a stunning city that resisted the many armies that tried to storm this almost Camelot-like setting. Then it's the Captain's Farewell Dinner on board with the Best Photo of the Cruise prizes awarded.

Saturday, Day 8 Le Somail

After breakfast, guests are transferred by private chauffeured minibus to their choice of location in Narbonne.

NB: * Itinerary is subject to change based on eventualities outside Capture and Create's control. **Depending on start point, the Cruise itinerary may run in reverse.
